Wingu Group has launched the second phase of its carrier-neutral data center expansion in Dar es Salaam, following a USD 50 million investment.
The facility, located in the Mbezi Industrial Area, is now the most connected data center in Tanzania, with interconnections to 13 operators.
The expansion doubles the facility’s rack power capacity to support energy-intensive applications and increases white space to accommodate additional racks, pods, and cages.
This ensures scalability to meet the growing demands of data processing, cloud services, and high-speed digital transactions, particularly in sectors like artificial intelligence (AI) and digital finance.
The carrier-neutral data center provides customers with access to multiple connectivity options without being tied to a single network provider.
Two integrated Meet-Me-Rooms allow multiple operators to interconnect, improving network redundancy and offering clients flexibility in choosing carriers.
The facility is designed to ensure that local internet traffic remains within the country, reducing latency and costs for businesses and consumers.
The upgraded facility also includes advanced biometric security systems to protect physical assets and sensitive digital data. A fully redundant uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system ensures continuous power reliability, with a 99.983% uptime guarantee, minimizing disruptions and safeguarding critical operations.
These features are backed by a Service Level Agreement to ensure uninterrupted service for businesses relying on cloud-based operations, e-commerce platforms, and digital financial services.
The expansion also adds 80 high-density racks to the data center’s infrastructure, bringing the total to 110. This additional capacity is tailored to meet the growing needs of the financial and technology sectors, which require secure and customized storage solutions.
Speaking about the expansion, Wingu Group Co-founder and CEO Anthony Voscarides stated: “Our carrier-neutral facility embodies our steadfast commitment to excellence and innovation. It is designed to meet the growing demands of modern digital operations and will drive forward the technological advancement of our region.”
The Tanzanian Internet Service Providers Association (TISPA) has also partnered with Wingu Group to extend the internet exchange to the data center. TISPA Secretary-General Noah Maina explained, “By extending the internet exchange to Wingu Group’s data center, we ensure that data traffic remains local, improving efficiency, reducing costs, and optimizing network performance for all operators.”
Launched in 2022, Wingu Tanzania is the first integrated carrier-neutral data center and cable landing station in the country. The facility is connected to the company’s other data centers across East Africa, including Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Somaliland.
