The Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation will build 1,400 communication towers by 2027 to expand rural coverage and connect directly to the National ICT Broadband Backbone. The project will provide reliable high-speed internet access and support Tanzania’s transition to a digital economy in line with the national development vision.

The Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL) will construct more than 1,400 communication towers across Tanzania to strengthen national network coverage and support the digital economy.

TTCL Director General Moremi Marwa announced that the rollout will begin with 626 towers in the 2025/2026 financial year, followed by an additional 850 towers in 2026/2027.

Speaking in Arusha during the Third Forum of Board Chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers of Public Institutions (CEOs Forum 2025), Marwa said TTCL is the sole owner of the National ICT Broadband Backbone and continues to receive substantial government investment to expand digital services.

He noted that the initiative aims to extend communication services to rural and underserved areas that private operators typically avoid due to limited commercial viability.

The new towers will be directly connected to the National ICT Broadband Backbone to provide reliable and high-speed internet services.

Since the program began six months ago, more than 100 towers have already been completed. TTCL expects all 626 towers planned for this year to be operational by June 2026.

Marwa recalled that in 2024, the President of Tanzania launched the national digital strategy, which aims to accelerate the country’s transition to a digital economy in line with the Tanzania Development Vision 2050.

In addition to the broadband backbone, TTCL also operates a national Data Center that supports digital platforms and enhances system efficiency.

These investments are designed to expand access to quality communication services, including high-speed internet, which plays a central role in promoting Tanzania’s digital economy.
