Tanzania’s First Syringe Manufacturing Factory Begins Operations with East African Market in Focus

Medical Dawlia Limited has inaugurated Tanzania’s first syringe manufacturing factory in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam. This facility is the result of a Turkish-Egyptian joint venture and produces syringes, IV drips, and polypropylene sutures, branded “Made in Tanzania.” With its first delivery of one million syringes to MSD, the factory is expected to meet local demand, reduce reliance on imports, and expand into East African markets.

On December 11, 2024, the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) and the Medical Stores Department (MSD) visited Tanzania’s first syringe manufacturing factory, Medical Dawlia Limited, in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam.

The factory represents a joint venture by Turkish and Egyptian investors and marks a major milestone in local healthcare manufacturing.

The factory has already commenced operations, supplying one million syringes in its first batch to MSD.

The syringes, as well as the planned production of IV drips and polypropylene sutures, will carry the “Made in Tanzania” label and be distributed across East Africa.

Local Impact and Regional Expansion

Mavere Tukai highlighted the facility’s significance for Tanzania, which had previously relied entirely on imported syringes. With Medical Dawlia Limited’s operations, the country can meet local demand while reducing dependency on imports.

Tukai also commended the factory for aligning with the government’s industrialization agenda and fostering self-reliance in medical supplies.

Gilead Teri emphasized the importance of the investment, describing it as one of the largest in the healthcare manufacturing sector.

He noted that Medical Dawlia Limited’s establishment is a direct result of the sixth-phase government’s commitment to creating a favorable business environment under President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

He urged more investors to follow this example and invest in the manufacturing of medical devices in Tanzania.

The company has ambitious plans to expand its reach across the East African region. According to company representatives, Medical Dawlia Limited aims to position itself as a pioneer in the production of medical disposables in Africa and the Middle East.
