The National Bureau of Statistics of Tanzania (NBS) has announced that the annual headline inflation rate for the year ending April 2025 slightly decreased to 3.2% from 3.3% recorded in March 2025.
The overall index went up from 116.06 recorded in April 2024 to 119.78 in April 2025.
Food Inflation
The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Inflation Rate for April 2025 has slightly decreased to 5.3% from 5.4% in March 2025.
Non-Food Inflation
On the other hand, the Annual Inflation Rate for all items without food and non-alcoholic beverages for April 2025 remained unchanged at 2.3%, the same as in March 2025.
Core Inflation
The Core Index, which excludes items with volatile prices such as unprocessed food, energy, and utilities (except maize flour), provides a more stable inflation rate for policymakers.
The Core Index covers 297 items, representing 73.9% of the total NCPI weight.
The inflation rate for the Core Index in April 2025 remained unchanged at 2.2% compared to March 2025.
Monthly Consumer Price Index March 2025 – April 2025
The National Consumer Price Index between March 2025 and April 2025 increased by 0.4%. The increase in the overall index is attributed to price increases for some food and non-food items.
Some food items that contributed to the increase include: wheat grains by 1.9%; rice by 4.7%; sorghum grains by 2.6%; finger millet grains by 3.7%; maize grains by 1.6%; maize flour by 3.1%; groundnuts by 0.8%; and dried peas by 2.4%.
Some non-food items that contributed to the increase include: cigarettes by 0.2%; products and materials for the maintenance of the dwelling by 0.4%; gas (LPG) by 0.7%; kerosene by 1.9%; firewood by 3.4%; charcoal by 2.7%; mattresses by 0.5%; household appliances by 0.6%; diesel by 0.7%; petrol by 0.9%; passenger transport by road by 0.5%; passenger transport by air by 0.2%; food and beverage serving services by 0.4%; and personal care by 0.2%.
