In October 2024, Tanzania’s Vice President, Hon. Philip Mpango, laid the foundation stones for two water projects worth TZS 30.8 billion in the Nzega District in the Tabora region.
The first is the Bukene Water Project, which costs TZS 29.3 billion and will be constructed in the Bukene ward in the Nzega district.
This project, with a pipeline network of 193.5 kilometers and 91 water collection points, is expected to benefit 85,607 residents with clean tap water.
The second project is the Wastewater Treatment Ponds Construction Project, which costs TZS 1.5 billion to be constructed in the Uchama ward in the Nzega District and is expected to last more than 20 years.
While laying the foundation stones, Tanzania’s Vice President, Hon. Philip Mpango, commended the Ministry of Water for its efforts to ensure that areas facing water challenges are being reached by utilizing water from Lake Victoria.
Hon. Mpango emphasized that the wastewater Treatment Ponds Construction Project should be used for irrigation farming to maximize its benefits and to ensure efficient utilization of water resources.
The Tabora Region
According to the 2022 Tanzania’s Population and Housing Census, the Tabora region has a population of approximately 3.3 million, making it the third most populous region in the country.
The Tabora region is renowned for tobacco farming. Tobacco production rose from 55,357 tons in 2007/2008 to 94,243 tons in 2009/2010, an increase of 33,502 tons or 55% compared to the previous year.
With over 95% of the crop being sold in international markets, tobacco sales have increased from USD 106.3 million in 2020/2021 to USD 389.6 million by December 2023.
