40MW Power Plant to Electrify the Geita Gold Mine

Wärtsilä Energy Solutions, a global supplier of power plants, recently announced that it will supply a 40MW power plant to the Geita gold mine in north-western Tanzania.

The power plant, expected to be operational in Q1 2018, will provide a reliable electricity supply to the Geita gold mine.

The turn-key engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) order includes four Wärtsilä 32TS engines running on heavy or light fuel oil.

The Wärtsilä power plant offers high simple cycle efficiency, and little deration on the electrical power at the elevated site conditions”, says Joost Bos, Business Development Manager at Wärtsilä Energy Solutions. “

Wärtsilä Energy Solutions is a global supplier of ultra-flexible power plants of up to 600MW operating on various gaseous and liquid fuels.

Geita Gold Mine

Geita, an open pit gold mine, started operations in 2000, initially as a joint venture of AngloGold and Ashanti.

With the merger of the two companies in 2004, the mine became fully owned by AngloGold Ashanti (JSE:ANG, NYSE:AU, ASX:AGG).

Since 2000, the Geita gold mine has produced more than 3m oz of gold. In 2010, the life of the mine was estimated to be more than 10 years. In 2015, AngloGold Ashanti’s gold production out of Geita stood at 527,000 oz.
