Tanzania has found huge deposits of uranium mainly in Namtumbo (Mkuju), Bahi, Galapo, Minjingu, Mbulu, Simanjiro, Lake Natron, Manyoni, Songea, Tunduru, Madaba and Nachingwea.
As of 2022, identified uranium resources in Tanzania were estimated at about 55,000 tonnes, but none of this has been mined commercially.
One of the major uranium development projects is the Mkuju River Project, located in southern Tanzania, about 470 km southwest of Dar es Salaam.
The project is being developed by Mantra Tanzania, a local subsidiary of Uranium One.
When operational, Mkuju will be Tanzania’s first uranium mine. It will establish Tanzania among the top 5 producers of uranium in Africa.
Australia's Gladiator Resources is in talks to sell its uranium assets in south-west Tanzania to strengthen its balance sheet. The company plans to redirect resources toward developing its rare earth projects in the United States.
Tanzania launched a USD 1.2B uranium ore pilot processing plant in Namtumbo. Tanzania will begin uranium mining in Namtumbo with a 139M-tonne deposit and an expected 22-year mine life. The project includes over 100,000 job opportunities and plans to generate electricity using domestically mined uranium.
