Tanzania Inaugurate USD68.5m Military Airport

Ngerengere Military Airport Tanzania

Tanzanian President John Magufuli inaugurated on 6th March 2017 the renovated military airport at Ngerengere in Morogoro region.

The reconstruction of the airport, by the Chinese government, began on July 12013, at a cost of USD 68.5 million.

Venance Mabeyo, Tanzania’s Chief of Defence Forces, explained that the reconstruction involved expanding the runway to enable huge military and commercial aircraft to land and take off.

He added that the military airport was now one of the best airports across the world, where huge aircraft such as Boeing 777 could land and take off smoothly.

The Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Lu Youqing, who was also present at the ceremony, said that the construction of the airport further cemented the relationship between China and Tanzania.

During the ceremony, President Magufuli has promised to build a paved road connecting the Air Force Base of Ngerengere to the Dar es Salaam – Morogoro highway.

Ngerengere Air Force Base (ICAO: HTNG) is a military airbase of the Tanzania Air Force Command. It is located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) west of Dar es Salaam.

The airbase was built with assistance from the Chinese government.
