Tanzania Inaugurate Kinyerezi II Power Plant

KINYEREZI 2 POWER PLANT

The President if Tanzania Hon. John Magufuli has inaugurated on 3rd April 2018 the Kinyerezi II power station in Dar es Salaam.

Based on the combined-cycle technology, the plant uses gas and steam to generate electricity with a potential to produce 167.82 megawatts from natural gas and 80.4 megawatts from steam.

The project worth USD 334 million has been financed for 15% by the Government of Tanzania and for 85% by a soft loan from Sumitomo Mitsui Bank & Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

During the inauguration ceremony, President Magufuli congratulated TANESCO and the contractor Sumitomo Corporation for completing the project 45 days ahead of the planned time.

From his side, the Minister of Energy Dr. Medard Kalemani reminded that this project, together with the upcoming Stiegler’s Gorge Power Generation Project, will double Tanzania’s total installed power capacity.

Currently (2016), Tanzania’s total power installed capacity is 1,357.69 MW composed of hydro 566.79 MW (42%), natural gas 607 MW (45%) and liquid fuel 173.40 MW (13%).

Tanzania Seeks Strategies to Revitalize Petroleum Exploration Activities
